Bamburgh Castle

Bamburgh Castle appears as Wentworth Prison in the last 2 episodes of season 1. Although adapted by CGI, we can see that it was the template for the fortress we see from a distance, as Claire approaches the prison, then leaves with Jamie after the rescue.

Bamburgh Castle is a castle with a rich history. The site dates back to the 5th century when it was the location of a Celtic Brittonic fort known as Din Guarie. This fort was destroyed by the Vikings in 993. However, the arrival of the Normans in the 11th century saw the building of the castle’s Great Tower, which became a central point of the current structure.

Bamburgh Castle

Fans of film and TV may recognise Bamburgh Castle. The imposing appearance, alongside a dramitic coastal location has attracted many film makers, appearing in many movies and small screen productions. Recent examples include The BFG (2016), MacBeth (2015) and The Last Kingdom (2018).
